Results of SIMC 2016

The Singapore International Mathematics Competition (SIMC) is a biennial international mathematics event that provides opportunities to fuel students’ interest in mathematics and spur them to reach for greater heights. The event aims to bring together bright students from around the world to pit their skills in a rigorous competition where they will demonstrate their creativity and mathematical skills in a mathematical modelling challenge. Students will have the opportunities to interact in social and cultural activities. SIMC also aims to provide a platform for professional exchange of good practices in Math education across different countries through the Educator Programme. It provides opportunities for mathematics educators to engage in professional discourse and establish and develop ties with counterparts from around the world.

The International Student Science Fair (ISSF) is an international student fair hosted on a rotating basis by a network of science high schools worldwide. It was officially launched in 2005 to facilitate international interaction and collaboration in science education. The ISSF brings together students, teachers and school leaders to share and develop their ideas about science in a modern world. The ISSF is the major event of its type in the world with a focus on the combined sharing and development of teaching and learning in science education. Each year’s event creates a learning hub for participants that provide a range of forums promoting the development in teaching and learning of science research and science education.

NUS High is hosting both 5th SIMC and 12th ISSF from 23 to 27 May 2016.

This year, SIMC received an overwhelming participation by 62 schools from 30 countries and regions. List of participating schools for SIMC is here. The 4 students representing NUS High are: Shashvat & Daniel Low from Year 6, and Clarence Chew & Lim Li from Year 5.

2016 A*STAR Science Award (Junior College)

The A*STAR Science Award (Junior College) is given to Singaporean JC1/Year 5 students who demonstrate particularly strong aptitude and interest in math and science to spur their passion in scientific research and development (R&D).

About 150 awards are offered through schools to JC1 students annually. Applications are invited through nominations by schools only.

There is no interview :)

Checking In NUS High Boarding

As a Year 5 student of NUS High, Lim Li has compulsory boarding for the entire year. The Boarding Fee for Singapore Citizen is $937.50 per term (about 10 weeks). It is inclusive of meals (breakfast, dinner and supper everyday; lunch is also provided on weekends and holidays) and laundry services. Lim Li checks in today.

NOI 2016 Training

Lim Li is currently attending the end of the year National Olympiad in Informatics (NOI) 2016 training at NUS School of Computing, from 23 Nov to 23 Dec 2015, held every Mon, Wed and Sat. Subsequently, she will be attending the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) Workshop 2016 from Jan to Apr 2016, to be held every Wed night and Sat afternoon.

For the algorithm mini contest 4 on 2 Dec, Lim Li was 2nd.

Lim Li shows a high level of conscientiousness, self-discipline and aims for achievement.  She has a sharp and analytical mind and is quick to speak out where she sees fallacies or when in disagreement.  Her excellent Mathematics aptitude led to her participating in the Kavics Cup 2015, a mathematics team competition organised by the Fazekas Mihaly School in Hungary. She also participated in the National Olympiad in Informatics 2015 and was awarded a silver medal.

Programme for Student Exchange cum Math Competition (Kavics Cup)

Student Exchange Programme (Hungary)

Lim Li has been selected to represent the school in the Student Exchange Programme between NUS High School and Fazekas Mihåly High School, Hungary. She will visit Fazekas Mihély High School from 14 to 21 March 2015.

The highlights of this exchange programme include an inter-school Mathematics competition, classroom observations, school-based activities and local cultural/historical experience. NUS High School offers full subsidy for this programme, which includes airfare, travel insurance and travel visa. Cost of accommodation, meals and local transportation in Hungary will be fully covered by the host school, which is Fazekas Mihaly High School.

The exchange programme will also include an inbound visit by the delegation of teachers and students from Fazekas Mihåly High School from 9 to 16 July 2015. Lim Li will be expected to play an active role in hosting their students and be involved in the preparations for their visit.

IOI Workshop 2014/2015

Lim Li is currently attending the December '2014 IOI (International Olympiad in Informatics) Workshop held at Icube Building, School of Computing, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 10 am to 5 pm. The programme for the IOI workshop is found here.

In the past, the IOI workshops (also known as the NUS CS3233 Competitive Programming elective module) started in January. This December workshop which is conducted by ex-IOI participants, commenced about a year or two ago, to provide more training for IOI potentials and to select high school candidates for the CS3233 module, which is typically held from January to April. Both Lim Min and Lim Jeck had attended this workshop conducted by Dr Steven Halim before (refer to here and here). Participants who obtain Silver and above medal in the National Olympiad in Informatics (NOI) (refer NOI 2014 website) and who are Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents will be invited to join the IOI workshop after the NOI prize presentation in March.

The workshop is structured and well organized. The lesson notes are available and an analysis of the workshop's training contests is done. For example, you can see the analysis of Day 1 contest here. Lim Li did a commendable job :)

Lim Li is also currently providing Math Olympiad training to a Primary 5 boy, every Sunday from 10 am to 12 noon (only for the November/December holidays). She is teaching him SMO Junior topics (Sec 1 and 2 Math Olympiad stuff), and also guiding him to tackle the more challenging SMOPS questions. More recently, she is giving Math tuition to a Sec 2 girl from an IP school.
